Body Building Supplements – The Basics of Body Building Supplements
There is a bit of controversy in the health and nutrition world regarding the benefits of body building supplements. A common canard that is thrown out often revolves around the notion that body building supplements “don’t work.” This is a sweeping generalization that is really without merit. Granted, there are silly supplements on the market that make bizarre claims such as being able to melt fat while you sleep, etc. These products are usually pulled from the shelves when it becomes obvious they do not work, but their initial appearance on the market usually confuse the consumer and tarnish the good name of supplements that do actually work.
Now, it is true that supplements will not work if one never actually lifts weights! Far too many people assume that body building supplements are magic bullets that will greatly enhance physical appearance without exercise. Such a notion is absurd and usually based on a lack of fundamental knowledge on the subject of what body building supplements actually are used for.
The key word that needs to be paid attention to is “supplement.” That is, the products are designed to supplement a diet that is deficient. Some individuals will stay away from protein rich food because it is high in fat. This can, however, lead to a protein intake deficiency that may require supplementation in order to return to a sense of balance. If you are deficient in your protein or creatine intake, then body building supplements that add protein and creatine to a diet will yield positive results.
However, this does not mean that it is advised to over do it. Taking in too much of a supplement can cause adverse if not outright serious problems for one’s health. In that regard, it is important to temper the intake of body building supplements with good common sense!
Syntha-6 by BSN

Category: Whey Protein
Price: Syntha-6 is priced high if you are buying it from a local brick and mortar store. You’ll look to spend around $60+ for a 5lb bottle. I buy mine online and spend ~$40 for the same sized bottle. There are also smaller 2.9lb bottles for around $29.00. BodyBuilding.com is a great place to buy Syntha-6 online.
Pros: Syntha-6 best quality is taste and mixability. This protein is high quality and tastes great. Very easy to get your daily protein with this product. It tastes like a chocolate shake but also comes in strawberry and vanilla. Chocolate is by far the best tasting and mixing in my opinion. Strawberry tastes great too but there are a few tiny seeds from real strawberries in the bottle which are annoying when you drink.
Cons: This protein is a little higher in fat than most other proteins. I suspect this has to be with BSN’s attempt at producing a great tasting protein. This protein is also a little low in grams of protein per serving. The bottle states 22g protein per serving. You can buy bags of whey at Costco or Sam’s Club with 25-27g protein per serving. I usually have a bag and a bottle of Syntha-6 on hand at any given time.
Mixability: 10/10 By far the best mixing whey protein on the market!
7/26/2011
How to use: I typically have 2-4 servings of this whey each day. It tastes great and is a great addition to any diet plan. I usually take my pre-workout by BSN and then follow my workout routine with 2 scoops of Syntha-6 mixed with 12oz of water. Tastes great!
Overall: 9.5/10 Good protein. Great flavor, mixes very well. Chocolate is the best. On my first bottle of strawberry and its good but waters down easily. Only downfall is it’s a touch high in fat but otherwise the gains are good and it is well priced if you shop around on the internet. I wish it had a few more grams of protein per serving but the taste and mixability make up for this downfall. Great product!

NO-Xplode by BSN

Category: Pre-workout
Price: 7/10 $35.99 from BodyBuilding.com. I’ve seen this stuff go for $50-$65 in GNC and other online stores.
Pros: Increased time in the gym with lots of energy. It tastes great and the bottle lasts a very long time.
Cons: It is a little expensive. Sometimes I feel a little disoriented immediately following taking the product. This will dehydrate you so you need to be sure to be drinking a ton of water.
Mixability: 9.5/10 Mixes the best out of the pre-workout products that I have tried.
How to use: Take one scoop of this product mixed with 8-12oz of water 30 minutes before your workout. Continue to drink water throughout your workout routine.
Overall: 9/10 No-Xplode is a pretty good pre-workout. I have been very satisfied with BSN as a whole and will continue to use this product for my pre-workout. I’ve tried the Fruit Punch and the Blue Raspberry and I like both. This one is best overall taste/mix-wise in my opinion. It is a touch expensive but it lasts awhile. I don’t feel like I am dependent upon it when I work out and I use this 5+ times per week. I was in GNC the other day and they wanted $50 for the same sized jar. Good product.
